Jr. Science Searchers – Completing Kindergarten
From Dinosaurs to Tropical Rainforests
Don your paleontologist hat for dinosaur explorations! Hatch a dinosaur egg, while considering carnivores, herbivores and omnivores. Ponder the continental drift. Construct fossils and explore body types and teeth structures of dinosaurs. How did they evolve in the different geologic periods and what made them extinct? Then join the ‘safari’ as we locate tropical rainforests on a map. Why is the rainforest important? How do plants, as well as animals like monkeys, bats and frogs, survive? What spices would you find? Make your own spice blend. Experience the unique sights, sounds and smells of the rainforest.
Ancient Academy – Completing Grades 3-8
Greek Party Life: Feasting, Festivals & Philosophy
Live the Greek high life as we recreate the Festival of Dionysius, food, fun and all! Join the thespians or be crowned a patron of the arts. Make masks, costumes and props for Greek tragedy and comedy. Explore the original sci-fi epic, the Odyssey, with strange monsters and weird situations facing our hero Odysseus! It’s the ‘eating-est’ epic in history! Did Alexander the Great follow Homer’s battle strategies? Can you write using the Greek alphabet? There’s always time for mayhem among the gods! Slave, free, stoic, cynic? Claim your role and experience the textures of everyday life in ancient Greece!
GRC’s Space Academy – Completing Grades 1-5
Missions Possible: Past, Present & Future – Travel through the Galaxy
What if your future mission is traveling through a wormhole? How will you survive the high radiation and ‘exotic’ matter? Could you develop a robotic probe using LEGO® materials to test some of the challenges? How will the probe help in your explorations and mission safety? Design a space station for travel in the galaxy. Consider life support, communications and solar power. Experiment with magnets to consider ‘radiation’ and magnetospheric impact on our new base. What survival gear do you need? How will you feed guests? Construct and launch your own rocket; will the space authorities intercept your renegade mission?
GRC’s Advanced Space Academy – Completing Grades 6-8
Missions Possible: Past, Present & Future – Adventure through Space
Are you part of the Mars 100, scheduled for a mission to the red planet? What preparation do you need? How do you even pack for years in space? Will you return to earth? Examine the research from NASA’s study of the Kelly twins; what physiological implications exist for long-term space travel? Work with a team from ‘other countries’ to design a mission to a point in the solar system. Consider the Juno mission: How can we apply information about Jupiter’s origins, structure, atmosphere and magnetosphere? Can you program LEGO® Mindstorms® EV3 to assist your exploration? Build a rocket, launch it and analyze the results.
Academy Americana – Completing Grades 1-3
Pack Your Wagon for the Trail West!
Grab your gear, whittle down your stock, and get ready: We’re heading west! Use an authentic packing list from a real 1800s wagon train, and pack your own ‘Conestoga wagon.’ What games will you play on the trail? Will you make it to Oregon or die of dysentery? From trailblazing to homesteading, experience pioneer living, as they made butter, clothing, toys, quilts and crafts. Be part of the Gold Rush: Will you strike it rich? On the ranch, will you brand the herd or stock the chuckwagon? Explore the diaries of pioneers like Laura Ingalls and Lewis and Clark. Will their journals give us clues as we try modern-day geocaching? Seek your fortune in the frontier!
Academy Themes Connect With Physical Training
An integral part of each Summer Academy experience, our physical training (PT) is no ordinary play time. Activities are directly linked to each Summer Academy. For example, in Math, Marvels & More, enjoy scooterboard math games and cooperative math aerobics. Space cadets will use teamwork in their cooperative games as they prepare for space travel. No matter the era or interest, PT always spells F-U-N!
$490 per 2-week session
