Dialogue With The Director: Looking Back and Looking Forward with GRC

Fifteen years ago four women sat around a kitchen table, talking about the need for programs for bright children. From this humble beginning, through much hard work of dedicated teachers and volunteers, has evolved Gifted Resource Council.

As GRC commemorates its 15th anniversary in 1998, it seems appropriate to take stock of the past as well as to look to the future. Classes on a wide variety of topics have stimulated young minds from the very beginning. That broad range of opportunities for learning quickly evolved into Learning Lab classes, a major focus that endures to the present.

Space Academy, our "flagship" summer program begun in 1984, has been growing in popularity and numbers ever since. Over 2,000 youngsters have been inspired to "reach for the stars" through this favorite Summer Academy. Just as surely, untold numbers of students have delved deeply into the mysteries of history through Ancient Academy, begun in 1986. Through 15 years of summer programs, other topics have been explored...from life sciences to music to foreign language to Math, Marvels and More.

Academic Challenge Cup, our series of friendly competitions in the areas of math, language and creative problem solving, originated in 1984. From a pilot program with only two school districts participating, this annual event has grown to include over 1,300 students from over 70 different schools!

Parenting classes, held in conjunction with Saturday Learning Lab and Academic Challenge Cup, meet the needs of adults who look for guidance from professionals and experts knowledgeable in issues that challenge those of us who work with bright children.

As for the future...where is Gifted Resource Council heading? In the summer of 1998 our first group of seventh graders and teachers will travel to Ecuador to study with scientists as part of our far-reaching Amazon Rainforest Student Research Project. We will celebrate fifteen years of GRC with Family Game Night in March. Topics of future endeavors are continually being suggested and considered, as we earnestly strive to remain the unique organization that was dreamed of and begun by those four visionary pioneers for gifted education. Let's celebrate 15 years of history as we look to the future of Gifted Resource Council! gold star
