Academic Challenge Cup
Gifted Resource Council sponsors Academic Challenge Cup so that children may have an opportunity to learn in a challenging and enjoyable environment, to experience the joy of friendly competition, and to "test" their skills in a self-selected area of interest.

Coaches are encouraged to bring teams of 5 students who will work together toward a common goal. Students will enjoy the camaraderie of playing open-ended games while enhancing their learning experience.

The games all have one thing in common: they teach children how to think, not what to think.

Academic Challenge Cup is a series of academic competitions in math, language skills, and creative problem solving for students in Grades 2-8. Teams may be coached by teachers or parents. Academic Challenge Cup is set for January 4, 7, & 8, 2008 and March 11 - 14, 2008 at Washington University.

The fee per team is $75.00 and is non-refundable. The deadline for registration is February 8, 2008, space reservation is first come, first served.

LinguiSHTIK (grades 4-5; 6-8) - An open-ended language game involving many aspects of English - vocabulary, word functions, grammar, sentence structure, and spelling. Players use letters on cubes to form words and make "demands" on other players.

Equations (grades 3; 4-5; 6; 7-8) - A game of creative math that provides players with practice in arithmetic operations and assists in developing an understanding of number concepts, number systems, factors and primes, order of operations, and simple algebraic equations.

Creative Convention (grades 2-3) - This competition requires no advance preparation other than practice in creative problem-solving and working as a team. Enjoy a morning of fun to stretch your imagination.
Free workshops are available for parents and teachers to learn the challenging games of Academic Challenge Cup.

Each Creative Convention team that is registered for Academic Challenge Cup must bring a judge who has attended a training workshop. Therefore, if you have 5 teams registered, you must have 5 judges. Each teacher/coach may bring a maximum of 5 teams per day. Judges who have been trained in prior years need not attend another training. Teachers may serve as a judge. Judges will be assigned to teams other than their own. Please call the GRC office at 314-962-5920 to indicate which training workshop your judge(s) will attend.

Judges' workshops will be held:

Additional points of information:
  • No alternates will be allowed for any competition. An alternate is considered an additional student who will rotate in. A substitute player may be brought for a child who is ill or absent the day of the event.
  • No preschool siblings should attend. Space is at a premium.
  • Each child should bring a sack lunch including a drink. This will be consumed during the waiting period at the end of the program while the final scores are being tabulated. It is a good idea to have each student bring a filled water bottle to use during the competitions.
  • Please bring several trash bags, labeled with your school name, to use for storage of lunches and coats during the competition.
  • Creative Convention teams, don’t forget your supplies! Please bring the following for each team: one pair of scissors per student, rulers, crayons or markers, stapler, tape, glue or glue sticks. All other supplies will be provided.
  • Creative Convention Judges should bring a clipboard to use for scoring.
  • Each Equations and LinguiSHTIK team must bring their own game and timer to use for the competition.
